Dermatology Research & Practice Scholars
Since 2000, Dermatology Associates of Tallahassee (DAT) has provided a clinical training and research program for a select group of students who have completed an undergraduate degree and will be applying to medical school or physician assistant school. The program’s mission is to foster a lifelong commitment to the pursuit of knowledge through creating a more formalized method for students to gain the experience that will increase the likelihood of their acceptance into medical school or physician assistant school. The students in this program gain invaluable, real-world experience applicable to a future career in higher level medicine.
The program is offered in DAT’s Tallahassee and Jacksonville locations, accepting 25-30 students annually.
The program is for those students who have completed their undergraduate degree and will be taking a gap year to gain experience while applying to school. The program is a paid one-year commitment working full-time. During the gap year, the student will be called a Clinical Assisting Student, functioning as a Medical Assistant, where they will get one-on-one hands-on patient care experience working with the physician and their clinical staff. The students will be trained in the following: patient workups, surgical procedure setup and assistance, patient numbing, cleaning and stocking exam rooms. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their skills, clinical experience, and knowledge for a more competitive medical/physician assistant school application. The experience and skills learned during this program is priceless.
